chattr shows you who is near you, without showing where, and lets you wave at them. This page says exactly what it collects to do that, who sees it, and how long it is kept. It is written to be read rather than to be survived.
The short version. Nobody is ever shown where you are. A wave disappears after an hour and a conversation after a day. Deleting your account deletes everything, immediately and for good. Nothing is sold to anybody.
What other people can see
Only this: your first name, your age, your photographs, what you wrote about yourself, and your interests. Nothing about where you are or how far away.
Your phone number, your email address and your date of birth are never shown to another person. Your age is calculated from your date of birth so that it cannot go stale; the date itself stays private.
Location
chattr uses your location to work out how far away the people around you are. Your position is never shown to anyone, and neither is your distance from them. Nobody is told how far away you are. Not in miles, not rounded, not in words. There is no map, no pin, no address and no direction.
The app tells you how far the whole field reaches, and that is all: within ten miles, say. It never says where in it anybody is. That is deliberate. A distance is a circle drawn around whoever reads it, two of them meet at two points, and three of them, or one watched while somebody walks, is an address. Not giving the number is the only way that stays impossible.
If you allow background location, chattr keeps working out that distance while the app is closed, so that people near you can still see you and wave. You can withdraw that at any time in iOS Settings, and the app keeps working with less of it.
Photographs
Photographs you add are stored so they can be shown on your profile. Before one appears, a copy is sent to an automated checking service to judge whether it breaks the rules: no nudity, no violence, no contact details in the image, and a profile picture that shows one face which is yours. The copy sent for checking is a reduced size version and is not kept after the verdict.
It is a check on the picture and nothing more. It is not an age check, and nothing here confirms how old anybody is.
Your voice
If you talk to chattr to write your profile, the audio never leaves your phone. iOS turns it into text on the device itself. The text is then sent to a language model to write your profile and pull out your interests. The transcript is not stored after that.
Waves and conversations
A wave lasts one hour and then disappears. A conversation lasts one day from the moment it opens, and then it and every message in it are deleted. There is no archive and no way to recover either, including for us.
What is kept, and for how long
- Your phone number, for as long as you have an account. It is how you sign in.
- Your email address, if you add one, for as long as you have an account. It exists only so you can get back in if you lose your number.
- Your profile: name, date of birth, photographs, what you wrote, interests. Until you change or delete them.
- Your current location, held only long enough to work out distances. No history of where you have been is kept.
- Waves for one hour. Conversations and messages for one day.
- A notification token for your device, so alerts can reach it.
Who else is involved
chattr uses a small number of services to work, and each one sees only what it needs:
- Twilio sends the code that verifies your phone number.
- Resend sends the code that verifies your email address.
- OpenAI and Anthropic check photographs and turn what you said into a profile. They are not given your name, your number or your location.
- Apple delivers notifications to your phone.
- Railway and an object storage provider host the service and your photographs.
Nothing is sold, and nothing is handed to advertisers. There are no advertisers.
Deleting everything
Settings, then Delete account. It removes your profile, your photographs, your waves, your conversations and your account itself. It is immediate and it cannot be undone. Your phone number becomes free to sign up with again as though you had never been here.
Age
chattr is for people 18 and over. Accounts that appear to belong to somebody younger are removed.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and the app will say so. Continuing to use chattr after that means the new version applies.
Asking us anything
Write to support@chattr.site. That includes asking for a copy of what is held about you, or asking us to delete it if you cannot reach the app.
